Frequently Asked Questions
What time is my appointment? / How do I know when my appointment will be?
You'll receive/sign up for your specific appointment time when you arrive at the conference on Monday evening. Please note that your appointment may happen during one of our Declare sessions, so we recommend you asked a friend to take great notes for you!
What do I bring to my appointment?
If you are meeting with an agent or publisher, plan to bring a copy of your completed, edited book proposal or one-sheet. If you're meeting with more than one professional, bring a fresh copy for each meeting. You should also bring a few of your pressing questions. Have a concise summary of your message and your goals ready along with your questions and places where you struggle. (TIP: The less time you need to explain yourself and your message, the more time you'll have to receive feedback. Prepare and plan accordingly!)
My proposal isn’t quite finished, or I’m in the idea stage still … is it okay to make an appointment?
Yes! We have opportunities this year for you to meet with a literary agent or industry consultant for the purposes of shaping your idea into something publishers would be excited to hear about.
I purchased a one-on-one ticket. When is my specific appointment time?
When you arrive at the conference on Monday evening, you will receive/select your specific appointment time. Please note that your appointment may happen during one of our Declare sessions, so we recommend you asked a friend to take great notes for you!
Can I sign up for more than one appointment?
Yes! We invite you to get as much feedback as possible. Just make sure you bring plenty of copies of your work!
What should I wear to my appointment?
Like any professional setting, we recommend that you look professional, keeping in mind that our industry tends to be dressy casual. The most important thing to wear is your confidence and a smile.
Will I get signed by an agent or publisher at this appointment?
There is no guarantee you will walk away from your appointment with a signed contract (that’s pretty rare.) However, you'll come away with great feedback, suggestions to improve your idea, proposal, or presentation, and a professional contact in the industry.
I am super nervous and afraid I might mess up. What advice do you have?
Remember, everyone at Declare has the same goal … to help you get your message out to the world. Our industry experts want nothing more than to see you succeed. They are most excited when you ask questions and they can share all their hard-won wisdom. We recommend you have fun, enjoy the process, and be a good listener, too.
I think my idea is great but what if my social media platform isn’t?
There is no exact formula for what makes your book idea a sure thing. Publishers do look for great writing, a great idea, and a strong following but there is more to it than that. Are you someone who is a hard worker? Are you confident? Are you passionate? Are you a well-known speaker? Is your story unique? In short, we recommend that you are always working on reaching your target audience but keep in mind that it’s more about the big picture than hard and fast numbers. Our experts can also help you with growing your social media and platform!
What else do you recommend?
You may consider bringing business cards and leaving one with each professional.
Also, your idea and/or work may never be perfect so please don’t stress! These appointments are designed to help and encourage you. While it is possible to get a contract from your appointment, it doesn’t happen very often at any writer’s conference. The point of these sessions is to encourage you!
