Why is everyone so afraid to call themselves a writer? It’s a simple definition, if you write you are a writer. But there is this fear, this trepidation over those six letters. It’s as if calling yourself a writer ventures into holiness. There is a reverence and awe amongst our blogging community for the word writer. A sacredness. Something that we can only hope to be someday. I’m afraid we are putting to much hope in the word “writer.”
When did it become commonplace to be a Christian but sacred to be a writer? Why are we exchanging a simple noun for divinity? I fear we are finding too much identity here, in these virtual spaces. We slap labels on ourselves and define our roles to the world around us. Don’t believe me? Check any ‘about me’ section on twitter and it likely reads something like “wife. mama. coffee drinker. jesus follower” or like mine “loves Jesus, black coffee, baseball, baking cakes” It’s so easy to place our identity in these things we see, these tangible evidences of who we are. But that is not who you are.
If you are in Christ your only identity is as a Christian. You are a follower of Christ. A daughter, beloved by the King. A saint. That is the identity we should speak about in hushed, reverent tones. We should tremble at being called a child of the Most High God. Not because we are afraid, but because we are honored, humbled, in awe. If you follow Jesus, meaning that if you traded in your sins for Jesus’ perfection, then you stand justified in the eyes of God. If you know that you can not possibly attain perfection apart from Jesus, and you’ve asked Him to stand in the gap and be your perfection, then you are HIS CHILD. You are loved and accepted as family. If these things are true, than you can stand firm on the promises in God’s word. You can know that the old you, the one filled with fear, that person is GONE and a new person has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
If you are in Jesus, you are literally a new person. You have an entirely new identity. You are no longer ruled by your flesh, but governed by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit that dwells within you, He calls you brave. He gives you a spirit of boldness and power.
So fear not, my sisters in Christ. If you write you are a writer. And if you follow Jesus… you are a Christian And oh, that is so much more important. {here’s a list of things God says are true about you if you are a Christian}
